What is “residual verb second”? And what does Romance have to do with it?

This paper aims to clarify a point of persistent confusion in the literature: namely, status residual verb second. We approach this from both terminological and typological perspective. Terminologically, traditional usage V2 literature has conflated two different senses (one formal, one historical); we argue that it is essential keep these separate. propose distinction between partial within general typology Following formal definition recent literature, define partial-V2 systems as involving genuine instances are limited nondeclarative environments given language (e.g. English). By contrast, (re)define describing purely vestigial structures do not qualify formally synchronic grammar language, despite their historical origins an earlier stage which had true V2. In respect, almost all modern Romance languages provide clear examples V2: syntax only historically related V2, with traces having been long lost, even nondeclaratives. With clarifications place, updated systems, conceiving spectrum degrees through strict (as measured by set formally-V2 allows).
